On 14 November 2013, Justice Parker was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of South Australia and as the first President of the South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (SACAT).  From 1970, Justice Parker worked in the Commonwealth Public Service in the Department of Immigration and later Social Security. He studied law at the University of Adelaide whilst continuing to work in the Public Service.

He was admitted to practice in 1990 and immediately joined the South Australian Crown Solicitor’s Office.

At the Crown Solicitor’s Office, Justice Parker practised in administrative, constitutional, public employment, industrial relations and state taxation law and high level statutory interpretation. He headed the Officer’s public law practice from 2004 as Assistant Crown Solicitor, Advising and later Deputy Crown Solicitor.

Justice Parker was appointed as Crown Solicitor in 2010. In June 2013, he was awarded the Public Service Medal by the Governor General for outstanding public service in the provision of legal and industrial advice.

Justice Parker will talk about the establishment of the SACAT and its proposed jurisdiction; and provide some observations of how it will operate.

This is a unique opportunity for members of the Society to hear from the first President of the SACAT on an important development in the South Australian legal system.
